As an organic hair stylist, Instagram brings forth new challenges and opportunities to showcase my portfolio, as well as, my personality. Twenty years ago there was no social media presence and how I grew my business was through word of mouth and quality service. Guests walking around were my social media presence. My guests were stopped in grocery stores or shopping malls through the lost art of conversation. How things have changed.
Educated guests are my best customers, and providing an extensive showcase of my portfolio, products, and information helps them make better informed choices. Instagram is a powerful visual platform for hair stylists to communicate to their audience. It has the potential to be a force multiplier. Often I feel like it is a dating site. People browse through stylists portfolios trying to find the perfect match for them. Sound familiar? A relationship between a stylist and new guest is very similar to a first date. Guests often hunt all over the web trying to collect information ensuring this individual is legit and is truly who they say they are before their first visit. My profile would say, “I am just an organic hair stylist looking for mutual like-minded guests.” Be true to yourself and you will attract the people you want to work with.
Building a new clientele is like fifty first dates. During the initial visit I feel like we are just getting to know each other. Building a relationship takes time, however first impressions are everything. Did we have chemistry? Was I a good listener? Did they feel like they were taken care of? These are the questions I ask myself because I truly care about my guests’ experience and want to earn their trust. With thousands of stylists to choose from, I separate myself by focusing on quality customer service and a safe salon environment. I treat guests how I would want to be treated.
